2021.10.27 19:27 greenielove [POEM] On Broadway by Claude McKay
About me young careless feet Linger along the garish street; Above, a hundred shouting signs Shed down their bright fantastic glow Upon the merry crowd and lines Of moving carriages below. Oh wonderful is Broadway — only My heart, my heart is lonely.
Desire naked, linked with Passion, Goes trutting by in brazen fashion; From playhouse, cabaret and inn The rainbow lights of Broadway blaze All gay without, all glad within; As in a dream I stand and gaze At Broadway, shining Broadway — only My heart, my heart is lonely.

2021.10.27 19:27 negativegirl Idk why but I don't want to hang out with my friends on my birthday and my parents are questioning me
My birthday is coming soon and my parents suggested going with my friends to a pizzeria. Idk why, I don't want to do it. Don't like the idea, feels uncomfortable. There's nothing wrong with my friends but I'm suddenly feeling like that. Has anyone gone through that? Also felt uncomfortable when my mom seemed worried that I'd only invite 2 friends (the ones of the few that I'm close)
I said I didn't want to do anything on my birthday, my parents found it strange but said it was ok. So my dad asked me today why I didn't want to hang out in a kinda suspicious tone, I didn't really know how to answer but he kept questioning me so I said it was bc being outdoors wasn't my thing (which is not a lie)
He then suggested bringing my friends home, which is even worse bc my parents obviously will be here so we won't talk freely and it'll just be awkward and boring
I didn't want to reject the idea bc he would question me again so I said "I don't know...well maybe" and he said he would bring it up to my mom. I know they're just being good parents but I don't want to do it
What do I do now? What am I gonna say if they ask me why I don't want to hang out? I know it's silly but idk what to do

2021.10.27 19:27 yellow_jacket2001 Is it possible to work through family trauma while LIVING with them?
It's been an up and down roller coaster. When are are on good terms, we are. But when we aren't, we act as if we don't know each other. Takes hours to resolve (old stuff gets brought up and creates more angenot wanting to listen to the other person bc that person was abusive in the past/fits of rage/sadness/finger pointing etc)
And then when we have made amends, we go back to normal as if nothing happened. This repeats frequently weekly-monthly.
Wanted to try working through the family trauma while living together but it's actually making it worse.

2021.10.27 19:27 petardpan Screen time is not the devil
Sometimes you need a break to do stuff around the house. Sometimes you need a break to poop for 5 minutes without interruption. Sometimes you just NEED A BREAK. Screen time is a tool in your toolbox. Whether it's Netflix or YouTube or whatever, if you use it right it's beneficial. If you need a break you can find something to entertain (I'm looking at you Bluey... not you Caillou... you, I dont like [and that's just me, you do you]) or enlighten your child (Storybots or maybe Daniel Tiger.. although he's lucky I grew up on Mr Roger's neighborhood or he'd be there with Calliou). Just like a tool, don't leave it with a kid without some supervision. Even if your kid gets to the point where they are choosing things you don't like them to watch, tell them why you don't like it and you can suggest something else. Having a toddler is hard. Try not to make it harder by trying to hammer a nail with a screwdriver or letting someone shame you into not using all the tools at your disposal. You got this! Take care of you so you can take care of them!

2021.10.27 19:27 ReddiTrawler2021 The Romans haven’t been the same since Belgium
“Asterix in Belgium” felt a lot like a finale, not just because of Goscinny’s passing but because it looked like Julius Caesar had finally had enough of dealing with the Gauls. His last words (the UK version of the comic) were of him angrily calling all the Gauls crazy and leaving for Rome, not wanting to be bothered any more with their shenanigans. I can’t be sure if that was intentional or not, but in any case, ever since that story the Romans haven’t been the same.
It was a delicate situation Goscinny drew up: Asterix’s little Gaulish village was on equal terms with the Roman Empire, both resisting and relating. The village could tolerate easily living alongside the Roman cultures, but stubbornly resisted any plan of oppression, either by force or subterfuge; the Mansions of the Gods situation was proof of that. That sort of deadlock decreased after Goscinny’s time; apart from a couple of plots from Caesar (Black Gold, Secret Weapon) the Roman stance is pretty much reduced to keeping an eye on the Gauls and provoking them as little as possible. Caesar even shared a banquet with Asterix in the comic with the baby; I was okay with the concept as a one-time affair, but you could call it a demonstration of how much things have cooled down between the village and the Romans.
A great part of this issue is an external matter. When Albert Uderzo took over, he expanded Asterix’s world, taking him on adventures beyond Roman borders to Babylon, India, Atlantis and even outer space (though the less said on that the better). As a consequence, the Roman Empire has reduced their dominant occupying position.
Even the (relatively) recent post-Uderzo comics are suffering from this problem, with Asterix heading over to Caledonia and Obelix doing a chariot race across Rome. The only time Caesar has been active was in the affair with the Missing Scroll, and all that was at stake was the village being lost to obscurity, which isn’t that big a deal compared to their exploits. I hope the writers can find a way to make Caesar and his empire a legitimate rival/threat to Asterix’s village.

Just had a table of 7 all old guys. I overheard them saying it's the eldest guys birthday. They ordered and got their food. One guy asked for mustard. I guess he forgot about it. When I brought it, he was like you read my mind. Once they were finished and paid their bill, I brought out a free ice cream with a candle, the old guy burst into tears. He was like how did you know? It's was a pretty great morning

I would like to ask if Jordan Peterson has ever given a discussion or seriously analyzed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He may have, but I am not aware of an instance. In listening to Maps of Meaning, I have seen that he says essentially that past civilizations were not incorrect, even though from our objective point of view we cannot directly understand them. He also states that civilizations that last and are successful prove their value and the truth of their way of life. This is not to say that everything these civilizations did was perfect, but that the general premise of their culture and existence was a viable option and that the principles they live on are, at least mostly, true. By this, we can learn from the rapid spread of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the cultural, political, and economic success of many of its members, that there must be something correct about the religion. This also implies that the long term success of the Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, etc. churches implies their correctness as well. The reason I focus on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is for its unique doctrine, intense persecution early in its history, and the incredible momentum it gained and kept in a short space of time.
Somewhat related note that also applies to Maps of Meaning: The Book of Mormon is stated to be a book of scripture that the Lord had written and compiled specifically for our day, the days directly preceding the second coming of Jesus Christ. If this is true, then what would such a book say? Would it not speak to a group of objective thinkers much more than a book like the Holy Bible? The simple answer is that it does. If you read the Book of Mormon, you see that it explains the gospel from an approach more like the scientific method. The Bible teaches using parables and narratives because that is the great drama Jordan Peterson was talking about. They perceived the world, and learned, from discussions of actions and relationships, where we perceive the world more through objective science, and empirical evidence. This being the case, rather than say faith is like a mustard seed and leave it at that, the process for gaining faith needed to be explained because we do not understand symbolism and parables as naturally. Alma 32 in the Book of Mormon is a great example.
21 And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.
26 Now, as I said concerning faith—that it was not a perfect knowledge—even so it is with my words. Ye cannot know of their surety at first, unto perfection, any more than faith is a perfect knowledge.
27 But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.
28 Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves—It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.
29 Now behold, would not this increase your faith? I say unto you, Yea; nevertheless it hath not grown up to a perfect knowledge.
Here it is explained to a more logical and objective mind rather than a symbolic / narrative driven one. I think the explanations this book gives are often from this perspective. Jacob 5 and other places use deep symbolism to explain concepts, in that case the scattering of the tribes of Israel and where they went. Often however, the book is effective at bridging the gap between a logical mind and how to effectively test gospel principles. In contrast, when Jesus teaches Nicodemus, Jesus teaches of spiritual rebirth (being born again of baptism and of the cleansing power of the Holy Ghost), and of the narrative of the great Atonement He was to perform. This is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful and poetic chapters of scripture ever written, and it is driven by symbolism and actors in a narrative.
John 3 KJV
16 ¶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 ¶ He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
The scripture from the Book of Mormon is an example of a process and how that process is done. The scripture from the Holy Bible tells us of the Son of God, what he means to us, and how we should or do feel and what that means. The contrast to me is very interesting. I would like to hear other peoples thoughts on the comparisons between these two books, and maybe the Old Testament vs New Testament?
